What if modern education could help transform a traditional family farm into a thriving agricultural business?
Mahesh Asabe, from Maharashtra, is showing how scientific knowledge and innovative farming practices can create new opportunities in agriculture.
Coming from a farming family in Solapur, Mahesh pursued Agricultural Engineering and Food Processing. He also travelled to Israel for specialised training in modern farming methods and water management.
His family began growing dragon fruit around 2013–14. After gaining practical knowledge, Mahesh introduced improved cultivation techniques, drip irrigation, and modern farm equipment to increase productivity.
Today, Rukmini Farms and Nursery has expanded its operations to around 60 acres, with approximately 22 acres dedicated to dragon fruit cultivation.
Here are some remarkable milestones from his journey:
Annual production of around 200 tonnes of dragon fruit.
Approximately ₹2 crore in annual turnover.
More than 25,000 farmers have visited the farm, according to Mahesh.
Over 500 farmers have purchased plants to start their own farms.
The farm supplies organised retail chains and online platforms, helping connect agricultural produce with wider markets.
Mahesh’s journey highlights how education, technology, and practical experience can help farmers improve productivity and build sustainable businesses.
His story is a reminder that agriculture is not just a tradition—it can also be a path to innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.
