From Onion Farms to Smart Technology: How Kalyani Shinde Is Helping Farmers Protect Their Harvests

A good harvest should bring profits, not losses. But for many onion farmers, the real challenge begins after the crops leave the fields.

Growing up in Lasalgaon, Maharashtra, a major onion trading hub, Kalyani Shinde saw how much farmers could lose when onions spoiled during storage. She decided to look beyond the problem and find a practical solution.

Her approach was to bring technology into traditional farming.

That idea led to Godaaam Sense, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system that tracks storage conditions, including temperature, humidity, and gases linked to spoilage. It can alert warehouse operators when conditions change, helping them respond before more onions are damaged.

The goal is clear: help farmers preserve more of what they grow, reduce avoidable waste, and protect their hard-earned income.

The reported results are encouraging, with onion wastage reduced by around 20–25% and the technology deployed across hundreds of warehouses.

Kalyani’s journey highlights an important lesson: innovation is not always about creating something entirely new. Sometimes, it means using technology to solve a problem that people have faced for generations.

When local knowledge meets practical innovation, even a traditional industry can find new ways to grow.
