What if a successful corporate career led not to another promotion, but to a new beginning in the mountains?
Subodh Shah, an IIT Roorkee alumnus, left behind 16 years of international corporate experience to pursue agriculture in Uttarakhand. His journey shows how technical knowledge and sustainable thinking can create new opportunities in rural India.
In 2020, he started a horticulture venture in Berni village, Tehri district, focusing on apple cultivation alongside traditional crops such as rajma and masoor.
But growing crops in the mountains comes with challenges, especially water scarcity. To address this, Subodh built a 3.5 lakh-litre rainwater harvesting tank to support irrigation and make farming more resilient to changing climate conditions.
With more than 1,500 apple saplings planted, his orchard is still developing. His long-term goal is to generate around ₹50 lakh in annual revenue as the enterprise grows.
His story highlights an important shift: professionals are bringing their skills back to rural India, combining innovation, sustainable farming, and entrepreneurship to build a stronger agricultural future.
