₹6 Lakh Annual Turnover: How Crochet Is Creating New Livelihoods in Uttarakhand

In Haldwani, Uttarakhand, a traditional craft is becoming a source of income and opportunity for local women.

Kritika Pokhariya, president of the Sahyogini Self Help Group, is working with women to turn crochet skills into marketable handmade products. From crochet flowers and soft toys to bags, cardigans and mufflers, the group is building a diverse product range.

What makes this story interesting is the combination of traditional skills + modern designs + digital reach.

The initiative has reportedly created regular work opportunities for around 10–15 women, while the group’s annual turnover has reached approximately ₹6 lakh.

Social media has also helped the products reach customers beyond Uttarakhand, including demand from outside India.

This is more than a handmade craft story. It shows how local skills can become small businesses when people come together, improve products and use digital platforms to reach wider markets.

From a traditional skill to a livelihood opportunity.
From local craftsmanship to wider markets.
From individual talent to collective entrepreneurship.

Stories like these remind us that entrepreneurship can grow not only in big cities, but also through local skills, self help groups and community led businesses.
